Yes — Rajaji National Park is open from November 15, 2026 to June 15, 2027. All 7 zone gates — Chilla, Motichur, Jhilmil Jheel, Ranipur, Satyanarayan, Andheri, and Gohri Range — operate during this period.

Jhilmil Jheel Conservation Reserve stays open until June 30. Gohri Range Buffer Zone is open year-round. The park closes mid-June to mid-November for monsoon season.

Yes — Rajaji was declared India’s 48th Tiger Reserve in April 2015. It covers 820 sq. km across Haridwar, Dehradun and Pauri Garhwal districts. The tiger population has grown steadily since declaration.

Named after C. Rajagopalachari — India’s last Governor-General and Bharat Ratna recipient. Constituted on 29 November 1983 by merging Rajaji (1948), Motichur (1964), and Chilla (1977) wildlife sanctuaries.

No — entry requires a valid safari booking. All visitors must travel in a Forest Department-approved Gypsy with a licensed naturalist guide. This applies to all 7 zones without exception.

Ranipur zone has the highest leopard sighting rate in Rajaji. Rocky Shivalik terrain near Beribara FRH is prime leopard habitat. Also the only zone for Himalayan Goral.

Motichur zone — gentle terrain, frequent elephant sightings at Koelpura grassland, just 9 km from Haridwar. Chilla zone is also excellent — elephants, deer, and Ganga riverfront engaging for all ages.

Yes — Chilla zone offers excellent gharial viewing along the Ganga canal road. Jhilmil wetland also has Mugger Crocodiles. Best: winter mornings November–March.

Rajaji is very safe when rules are followed. All safaris are in closed Gypsy vehicles — you never walk in the forest. Key rules: Stay seated. Never exit vehicle. No flash. Follow guide’s instructions at all times.

Stay still. Stay seated. Follow guide’s instructions precisely. Driver cuts engine at a tiger sighting. At elephant encounter, driver reads body language — holds position or slowly reverses. These encounters are entirely safe when rules are followed.

• Overnight train (best): Mussoorie Express — departs Delhi 9:20 PM, arrives Haridwar 5:00 AM. Taxi to Chilla gate in 20 minutes.
• By flight: Delhi → Jolly Grant Airport Dehradun (45 min) → taxi to Chilla gate (50 min).
• By road: NH-58 — 240 km, 5–6 hours.

No — personal vehicles are not permitted inside any safari zone. All visitors must travel in a Forest Department-approved Gypsy. Park your vehicle outside the gate — all zone offices have parking areas.

No direct public transport. From Haridwar:

December to February is the overall best time — cool weather, peak wildlife, migratory birds at Jhilmil.

Morning safari (6:30 AM) is strongly recommended — wildlife activity is highest in the first 2 hours after sunrise. Most serious sightings occur between 6:30 and 9:00 AM. Evening safari works well in spring (March–April) for golden light photography.

Perfect combination: 5:45 AM depart hotel → 6:30–9:30 AM morning safari → 10:30 AM back in Haridwar → 3:00 PM Har Ki Pauri → 6:30 PM Ganga Aarti. Morning safari ends by 9:30 AM — entire rest of the day free.
