Best Time to Visit Rajaji National Park — Month by Month Safari Guide 2026

The season opens on November 15 and the first two weeks feel magical. The monsoon has just ended — the forest is lush green, streams are running, and the air smells of wet earth and fallen leaves.

Chilla zone is ideal in November — the 36 km circuit through dense sal forest gives long sightlines as undergrowth starts thinning. Elephant herds, spotted deer, and tiger crossings are common.

At Jhilmil Jheel, the first migratory birds begin arriving in late November. Bar-headed Geese and Ruddy Shelduck appear on the wetland — a preview of what December brings.

December is the single best month to visit Rajaji National Park. At Jhilmil Jheel Conservation Reserve, migratory bird numbers peak — over 110 species simultaneously on the wetland. The Swamp Deer (Barasingha) — found only at Jhilmil in all of Uttarakhand — are visible in the open grassland every morning. This is a wildlife experience you simply cannot get anywhere else in North India.

At Ranipur zone, the Himalayan Goral moves lower on rocky cliffs to warm in winter sun — making December the absolute best month for Goral sightings. Ranipur is also where leopard sightings peak in winter. If leopard safari near Haridwar is your goal, book Ranipur zone in December.

Tiger sightings are frequent across Chilla and Motichur zones. Elephant herds gather near the river in large numbers.

January is when serious wildlife photographers plan their visit. The forest is fully dry — sightlines stretch deep into the trees. Animals concentrate near remaining water, making sightings almost predictable.

Jhilmil zone in January is extraordinary for bird watching — the wetland is crowded with waterfowl, waders, and raptors. Great Hornbill, Pied Hornbill, Crested Kingfisher, and migratory ducks are all active. If bird watching at Jhilmil Jheel is your priority, January is your month.

Ranipur zone delivers consistent leopard sightings near Beribara FRH. Sloth bear sightings also increase as they forage in the dry undergrowth.

February is the favourite month for first-time visitors. The cold has eased — mornings are crisp but comfortable. Forest is open, animals are active, crowds are smaller than December–January.

Motichur zone is excellent in February — elephant herds gather at Koelpura grassland. Satyanarayan zone, between Haridwar and Rishikesh, is ideal for a peaceful half-day safari when birdsong fills the air.

Ranipur zone in February is your last reliable window for leopard sightings — book a morning slot without hesitation.

March marks the shift from winter to summer. The forest floor turns golden-brown. Animals begin moving toward water sources — where things get exciting for big cat enthusiasts.

Tiger sighting probability rises in March. Chilla zone along the Ganges riverbed is outstanding — tigers rest on sandbanks in early morning. Andheri zone near Chilla Dam is excellent for leopard, elephant, and deer along the Ganges river stretch.

Jhilmil Jheel migratory birds begin departing mid-March — visit early March for the last of the winter bird action.

Summer is underrated. Fewer jeeps, less disturbance, better wildlife behaviour. Tigers and leopards are forced to waterholes by midmorning — creating dramatic sighting opportunities. Book morning safaris only in summer.

Gohri Range Buffer Zone is open year-round. Jhilmil Jheel stays open until June 30 — the only zone active in the final two weeks of the extended season.
